Basements and the base underneath
Basement tile goes on a slab, so we check it for flatness, cracks and moisture before layout. Cracks that are still moving can telegraph through tile and grout, so they are dealt with first. Upstairs, tile needs a stiff subfloor; a bouncy floor cracks grout within a season. Old vinyl or damaged underlayment comes up so the tile sits at a sensible height. Driveway access lets material be staged in the garage rather than carried through living areas, which keeps the rest of the house usable while we work.
Layout and finishing touches
The layout starts from the doorway you see first, so cut pieces end up along walls and under cabinets rather than in the middle of the room. Larger tile gives fewer grout lines but needs a flatter base; smaller tile follows minor unevenness better. Grout color is chosen with the tile, since a lighter grout shows wear sooner in a busy mudroom. Once finished, glazed tile needs little more than sweeping and mopping.
