Trim is part of the install plan. We can pull and reinstall baseboards, or add shoe molding or quarter round along the walls to hide the expansion gap solid and engineered hardwood needs.
Solid or engineered in a Nassau house
In a Long Island colonial, the main floor and bedrooms usually sit on plywood over a basement, which is where solid hardwood nailed to the subfloor makes sense and keeps the most refinish life. Split-levels are different: the lower family room is often a few steps below grade, close to the slab, and engineered boards glued or floated there cope with damp far better than solid. Capes often have a finished upstairs under the roofline, so we check that subfloor for bounce before boards go down.
One Nassau house can end up with solid hardwood upstairs and engineered below, laid in the same species so the stairs between levels still read as one floor. White oak, red oak and maple are the usual starting points, and samples are matched before anything is ordered.

Tear-out from the driveway
Old flooring comes up and goes straight out to the driveway, with no city stairwell to carry it down.
Lower levels
Finished basements and split-level family rooms get a moisture check before we settle on solid, engineered or a waterproof alternative.
Stairs and landings
Where the new floor meets a staircase, the nosing and transition are planned with the install rather than patched afterwards.
Trim
Baseboard and shoe moulding can go in with the new boards so the edges finish neatly.
Timing for a Long Island install
Once material is on site, a typical house takes two to four working days. A long colonial hallway with several bedrooms off it runs longer than a single living room, and tear-out or leveling a split-level slab adds time. Prefinished boards are walkable as soon as they are down; site-finished oak in a Garden City or Hempstead living room still needs stain and finish coats before furniture goes back. What affects the cost
Square footage and the hardwood you choose, solid or engineered, strip or plank, set most of the scope. Finishing on site adds sanding and coats, while prefinished boards go in faster. Stair treads and leveling the subfloor are added when needed, so you can get an instant preliminary estimate.

Can one Nassau house mix solid and engineered hardwood?
Yes. Solid on plywood upstairs and engineered in a split-level family room or finished basement is a common mix, in the same species so the house reads as one floor.
Do you install hardwood in finished basements on Long Island?
Engineered hardwood can go below grade when the product allows and the slab passes a moisture check. If the basement stays damp we will say so, and waterproof vinyl plank from our Nassau LVP page may be the better floor.
