Pattern floors with Brooklyn character

Walk into an old Brooklyn brownstone and you may find a parquet foyer, a banded border tracing the parlor walls, or a stair rail worn smooth by a century of hands. Why the subfloor matters more with patterns

Small blocks set at angles show every dip and hump underneath them. Before a single piece goes down we check that the base is flat, dry and firm, screw down squeaks, and level low spots. Layout lines are snapped from the room's center or a key sightline such as the front door, so the pattern looks square where you see it most. Borders are dry-fit around the edges, and a medallion is placed and scribed before the field closes in around it.

Restoring old parquet and stairs

Loose parquet squares, missing slats and gaps where a radiator once stood are common in prewar Brooklyn apartments. We reglue or replace loose pieces with matching wood, then sand and refinish the entire field so repairs disappear. Baseboards, shoe molding and quarter round

Trim finishes the edge of a pattern floor. We can remove and reinstall your baseboards or fit new ones, then run shoe molding or quarter round at the bottom to hide the small expansion gap along the walls. Shoe molding is slim and suits older trim; quarter round is rounder and a bit bolder. Trim is included in the same written estimate.

Choosing wood, color and finish for a pattern

Species and tone change how a pattern reads from across the room. White oak gives a calm, even grain that lets the zig-zag geometry stand out, while red oak adds warmth that flatters traditional millwork. Walnut or a darker stained band makes a striking contrast for borders and medallions against a lighter field. Wider, longer blocks feel relaxed and contemporary; narrow, short ones look formal and intricate. We usually recommend a low-odor water-based polyurethane topcoat, and an oil-based finish remains available if you prefer its amber depth. Bring photos, paint chips or fabric swatches to the visit, and we will lay out loose samples so you can judge scale, sheen and color in natural daylight and evening lamplight before anything is ordered.
