Hardwood for Staten Island houses

Most Staten Island installs are in single-family houses: colonials, capes and raised ranches with a living room, bedrooms upstairs and often a finished lower level. Above grade on plywood, solid hardwood is the long-life choice. Below grade, or over a slab in a raised ranch’s lower floor, engineered boards glued or floated handle moisture far better.

Because a two-story house connects its floors with a staircase, we plan the stair nosings and landing with the install so the hall and stairs line up.

Timing on the island

A single room can often be done in a couple of days; a full upstairs with a hall and stairs takes longer. Prefinished boards are ready once installed, while unfinished boards get stain and polyurethane on site. Matching new floors to the rest of the house

Many Staten Island houses already have hardwood in some rooms and vinyl or tile in others, and new boards have to live next to what stays. When a new floor meets an existing oak hall, we match species and board width as closely as possible and plan the transition at the doorway so it reads as intended rather than patched. If the rest of the house will be refinished at the same time, site-finished boards let us stain old and new floors together so the color is consistent from room to room. Kids’ rooms and family rooms see heavy use, so a durable finish and a sheen that hides scuffs are worth discussing. Upstairs bedrooms over a finished lower level are usually quiet installs; the noisier tear-out and cutting happen in the garage or driveway.
