Why the subfloor matters more for patterns
Pattern work magnifies every flaw underneath. A dip of a few millimeters that a straight-plank floor would hide can throw a herringbone line off across a room, so the subfloor is checked and leveled before layout begins. Over a full basement, seasonal humidity matters too: boards acclimate in the house first, and expansion space is planned at the walls. Engineered boards are an option where humidity swings are a concern, since their stable core moves less than solid wood through the seasons.
Timing and finishing
Herringbone and chevron take roughly twice the labor of a straight install, and borders, medallions and stairs add more, so the schedule is set after the on-site measure. Unfinished pattern floors can be stained on site, and we sand test spots so you see how a color changes the look of the pattern before the whole field is finished.
