Carroll Gardens

The old time Italian neighborhood still has an Italian flavor though it’s been modernized & diversified. It’s often listed as one of Brooklyn’s best neighborhoods with it’s charming garden front brownstones, lively main street, chic retail & Italian eateries.

Carroll Gardens is real old school Brooklyn. It’s one of the oldest neighborhoods, originally settled by Irish folks in the 1800’s. Eventually by the 1950’s it was mostly Italian. Today, like many Brooklyn neighborhoods it’s residents include people from everywhere. Still, the classic Italian culture remains ever present with cornerstone pastry & pasta shops, bocce courts & Catholic shrines & churches. You’ll often hear Italian being spoken by old time residents.

The neighborhood has a small town atmosphere. Neighbors know each other by name. The new & hip elements blend together cohesively with the old. (The theme of old and new blending together is something we always experience in our business of installing new floors and refurbishing old wood floors.)

Court & Smith are the main streets with all the shops. There you’ll find plenty of cafes, bars, lounges, yoga studios, boutiques & bakeries. You’ll even find the old style mom and pop grocery shops.

Red Hook

Next to Carroll Gardens sitting on the waterfront is Red Hook, another small town type of neighborhood. It’s the typical gritty industrial scene converted into the hip and trendy. With cobblestone streets and waterfront views the neighborhood is worth a visit.

The waterfront once served as a busy shipping port. Today the port still serves for cruise ships and ferries. Large warehouses everywhere have been converted into apartments. A warehouse has also been repurposed into a big Fairway Supermarket. New York City’s one and only IKEA is stationed there as well.

The waterfront sits right across from Governor’s Island. At Loius Valentino Park and Pier there are front seat views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. Being on the water however subjected Red Hook to the floodwaters of Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Red Hook does not have subway acess. You have to take a bus to Carroll Gardens. Still, it’s only like 45 minutes to Union Square. And a citywide Ferry serving Redhook was added in 2017.
