Bath Beach is another middle class family friendly neighborhood in Brooklyn where we’ve installed hardwood floors. Located on the southwest side of Brooklyn, Bath Beach was originally developed as a beachfront resort area for wealthy New Yorkers in the late 1800’s. After the stock market crash in 1929 and then with the Belt Parkway construction, the elite class left the area for Long Island. Some consider it’s heyday to be long gone. It is no longer a playground for the rich and famous. Bath Beach today doesn’t have a beach anymore either. It is now covered over by the Belt Parkway which runs right along the shoreline of Brooklyn’s west side.

Running alongside the Belt Pkwy is Shore Pkwy with a pedestrian promenade. The waterfront walkway may actually be better than a beach. You can walk or bicycle along the water to several points of interest. The pavement stretches for 6 miles along much of Brooklyn’s west side waterfront. From Bath Beach Park it runs northwest all the way up to Narrows Botanical Gardens in Bay Ridge. You get a grand view of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in this direction. Southward you can pass by the wonderful 14 acre Bensonhurst Park, Adventurer’s Amusement Park, Calvert Vaux Park and Caesar’ Bay Shopping Center which hosts the big box chain stores.

Bath Beach’s main shopping strip is along 86th St where you’ll find alot of mom and pop type shops and eateries. In the 70’s this strip was featured in famous movies & tv with The French Connection, Welcome Back Kotter & Saturday Night Fever. Lenny’s Pizza still stands where John Travolta strutted the boulevard & stopped for slices in the opening scene.

Like several Brooklyn neighborhoods, Bath Beach was once a typical “Goodfellas” Italian neighborhood. Today it has become widely diversified with Chinese, Hispanic, Russian and other immigrants. People come from all around for affordable family housing. The housing stock consists of stand alone and semi attached houses plus apartments. Bath Beach is no hoi polloi oceanside real estate location but it’s considered a relatively decent area with a suburban feel.
