Another one of Brooklyn’s premier upscale suburban type neighborhoods is Dyker Heights. With gorgeous homes, low crime, good schools, nice parks and a tight knit community, Dyker Heights ranks as one of Brooklyn’s most expensive neighborhoods.

Like several other neighborhoods in Brooklyn such as Crown Heights, Park Slope and Prospect Park South, Dyker Heights was planned as a high class suburban development. It’s founder Walter L. Johnson had a definite vision for the community. By 1899 it was rapidly becoming the most exclusive of New York neighborhoods.

The charm of the neighborhood has been maintained up until today. Strict building codes have resisted the construction of large buildings & condos. Apartment complexes have been kept to a minimum. What predominates are beautiful, well maintained single family detached homes.

Homes in the neighborhood are typically large & ornate. Mansion row off 11th Ave between 86th & 79th streets is where the most grande and luxurious homes are. The residents of Dyker Heights are very community oriented. Everyone takes pride in keeping their homes and neighborhood beautiful. Dyker Heights has long been a mostly Italian American neighborhood. The Italian culture can be seen and heard throughout the neighborhood. Church bells and music emanate from Church of St. Bernadette. Mom and pop Italian trattorias, pizzerias and pastry shops pepper 13th street, the main commercial street through Dyker Heights.

Though Dyker Heights remains uncrowded most of the year, during the Christmas season throngs of New Yorkers crowd into the neighborhood to see the annual Christmas light displays. Sometime around the 80’s Dyker Heights began this community wide effort where practically everyone decorates their home elaborately. While the place has become an annual winter wonderland it is reported that some residents are wondering if they really want the whole of New York City jam packing the neighborhood for the entire month of December.
