The area of Sheepshead Bay is a decent & pretty quiet part of Brooklyn away from all the hustle. When we visit there for flooring installations it’s like going to a New England seaside village. The area by the Bay on Emmons Ave is very relaxing with a nice walkable waterfront, piers, fishing & cruise boats, plus shops & dining. It seems that people enjoy living in the area and we enjoy working there.

This side of the borough is still old Brooklyn, for the most part. Though the area has been gaining notice more in recent years as Brooklyn’s real estate boom has been sending folks further south. Over here housing prices are somewhat more affordable or you get more bang for your buck. It’s quieter and less crowded too.

Traditionally Sheepshead Bay, like Brighton Beach, has been a settlement for many Russian & Eastern European folks. While there is still a prominent Russian presence, the area has diversified quite some. It’s reflected in the ethnic diversity of shops and restaurants.

Sheepshead Bay and Madison which is part of Sheepshead Bay have several commercial streets which give the neighborhood a well rounded variety of shopping options. Commercial streets include Emmons Ave, Shore Pkway, Coney Island Ave, Ave U & Kings Hwy. Kings Hwy is the main drag with tons of stores & restaurants. And there’s the Kings Plaza Mall as well, another major shopping outlet. Altogether the area offers pretty much endless shopping & dining.

Then there’s the nearby Marine Park, Brooklyn’s largest park area (within the Marine Park neighborhood). Sheepshead Bay is also right next to the whole beachfront area of Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach & Coney Island where there’s a wonderful beach, boardwalk & entertainment. With a waterfront, parks, abundant shopping, clean and less crowded streets plus more affordable housing we can see why this area is gaining attention.

Housing options In Sheepshead Bay are quite varied with detached homes, brick row houses, apartment buildings & condos. There are several commercial & residential developments in the works. Most notably is the 30 story 180 unit condo high rise recently constructed in 2017 at 1501 Voorhies Ave. It’s the largest building in the area and is a sign of the growing demand for housing in Sheepshead Bay.

Of course one drawback is the further commute to Manhattan. But if you don’t have to go to Manhattan for work it’s pretty ideal. The commute is 45 minutes to 1 hour by subway.

Neighboring Gerritsen Beach is another neighborhood where we’ve installed wood floors. Many of the houses there were damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. By 2018 now everthing has been restored and this little Irish Catholic beach village is thriving once again.
