Another Brooklyn neighborhood where we’ve installed floors is Greenpoint. Neighbor to Williamsburg, it’s also a neighborhood gradually experiencing the ‘Williamsburg effect’. We’ve been installing floors all around Brooklyn since 2005 and we’ve seen how neighborhoods transition.

It starts with cheap rent drawing in a new crowd. The old Brooklyn integrates with the young, hip, creative & artistic scene. Trendy venues for art, music, dining & nightlife begin sprouting up all around. Old warehouses & industrial spaces are converted into upscale condos & lofts. Gradually & steadily the housing costs rise. Next thing you know the place has become similar to Manhattan in terms of desireability & cost of living.

Greenpoint has yet to compare to Williamsburg in this sense. But we’ve seen a definite change over the past 10 years. You can see that in the new faces & businesses, renovation & new construction in the neighborhood. Perhaps Greenpoint is undergoing such change more slowly due it it being a further hike from Manhattan with somewhat less convenient subway access. Nonetheless Greenpoint is becoming a next hipster haven with plenty of cultural diversity, food, fashion, art, restaurants, bars & music.

Back in the day Greenpoint was a primarily Polish neighborhood known as Little Poland. Polish as well as Irish immigrants came to the area for shipping & manufacturing work. Though these aspects are history Greenpoint remains with an undeniably strong Polish flavor peppered with Polish bakeries, eateries & various businesses.

The neighborhood still has a somewhat quaint & relaxed vibe, though obviously as it is growing this may not always be. It is one of the Brooklyn neighborhoods recommended today for visitors to New York City. Actually any neighborhood on the West side fronting the East River with a view of Manhattan is recommended. And Greenpoints’ rooftop views of Manhattan are some of the finest.
